Ferdinand and Louise Schulze Home
Then
and Now...
|
|
The Schulze family came to Comfort in the fall of 1854. The family home was built in 1855, just west of Comfort across Cypress Creek, on 7th Street. The original home was a log cabin which remained in the central part of the house as additions were made over time.
Ferdinand Schulze accompanied the group under Captain Heinrich Schwethelm to the Nueces River, Kinney County, in August 1865, to retrieve the remains of the German Union sympathizers killed in the Civil War fight, Nueces Battle and Massacre, August 10th, 1862.
Ferdinand Schulze and Louise Schmidt were married on October 2nd, 1859, in the Schmidt family home. They had nine children, 3 dying at an early age and 2 at a more mature age. Matilde attended Cypress Creek School. Mrs. Schulze's funeral was conducted from the Schulze home on Saturday, February 2nd, 1921.
Matilde Schulze married Louis Wiedenfeld on July 1st, 1897. They had two sons, Benno and Eddie. Mathilde inherited the Schulze family home.
When Louis and Matilde retired in 1936 they moved into the former Schulze residence. They were delighted with their retirement home. It was a compact cottage with everything they required. The tank house, which supplied their water, was just outside the back door.
They put in flower beds and there was a rivalry between Mrs. Wiedenfeld and her neighbor, Mrs.
Dietert, over the quality and quantity and variety of flowers grown in their respective gardens.
The Wiedenfelds, despite having two young grandsons who visited them frequently, installed a fish pond at their side yard. It is still there today.
Sadie Maxwell, a school teacher in San Antonio, purchased the Schulze home from the Wiedenfeld family in the early 1970's. She retired from teaching in 1975 and moved into the home. She lived there until her death in 1983. The house was left to her grandchildren and was used as rental property for the next 30 years.
The Schulze home was purchased by Terry Butler and Mickey George on March 27th, 2004. |
